Laparoscopic adjustable gastric band surgery, or Lap-Band®, is a procedure in which a “belt” is put around the upper part of the stomach. This creates a small pouch of stomach above the band and leads to slower transit through the upper part of the stomach. The “belt” is then attached by a tubing system to a port that is placed below the skin on the abdominal wall. Patients will then have their band “filled” over time based on their individual needs. As the band is slowly filled, smaller and smaller amounts of food make the patient feel satisfied. Most patients will lose 40% of their excess weight after this operation.
